To suffer harm from a plan by which you had intended to harm someone else, e.g. she intended to murder her brother but was hoist with her own petard when she ate the poisoned food intended for him.

Origin

Origin: Shakespeare (Hamlet). A petard was a device used in the 16th century that looked like a small cannon and contained a small bomb for blowing up gates and walls when breaching fortifications.
