Special link with the Somme

QES has been commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, when 19,240 British soldiers lost their lives, including one of our former pupils, Thomas Arthur Airey.

Private Airey had been a star student at QES and had won a place at Cambridge just when the war started and he eagerly volunteered to serve in France.

Private Airey was killed as part of an operation that actually made it to the German front lines on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Somme. Here is more information on his personal story:

Commemorations at QES have been led by the History Department who have been showing classes a special video made for the national commemoration of the anniversary.
